Sunday, May 8th, 2016 Multi-Voiced Poetry Slam and 2016 Upstate Slam Team Fundraiser. This event will bring a twist to the standard poetry slam. During this event, teams of two to four poets are invited to compete in a two round poetry slam. To raise the standard of this event and to welcome traveling poets, group poets will be able to sign up in advance via email firstname.lastname@example.org or message Kimberly Simms Gibbs on Facebook. This event will follow the normal format of the poetry slam, except that at least two poets must be feature in each poem. The winning group of poets will receive $100.

Sunday, May 15th, 2016. Feature poet KrossWordz with host Moody Black. KrossWordz has been a Slam Poet for 11 years. He has been on multiple slam teams in his native New Jersey, and ultimately Piedmont SLAM where he was Grand Slam Champion of 2011 and now SLAM CHARLOTTE. He has travelled the country spreading truth and wisdom through humor and intelligence. Recording his first CD, LYRICA ENIGMA in 2003, and second CD in 2009, he has sold over 10,000 copies and is working on material to record the long awaited third, yet untitled release. He currently resides in Greensboro, NC. The night will include a Question and Answer session as well as a CD signing after the reading. A short open mic will allow local poets to share their work.

Sunday, May 22nd, 2016. Bullcity Durham vs Charlotte Respect de Mic vs Upstate Slam Exhibition. Hosted by Kimberly Simms. This exciting high-energy poetry slam will pit former National Poetry Slam Champion, Durham, NC against Charlotte's Respect de Mic vs our own local poets in a two round poetry slam. Preview the National Poetry Slam which will be held this August 2016 which will also showcase these teams! Like any poetry slam, judges will be chosen from the audience, but the slam is merely a vehicle to create magic on stage! The night will also feature a short open mic. .

Sunday, May 29th, 5th Annual King of the South Slam hosted by Moody Black. $400 First Prize. No Open Mic. Poets sign up in advance with a $25 registration fee. Contact Moody Black. A poetry slam is a performance poetry competition judged by five randomly chosen members of the audience. Each poet will perform one original poem without musical accompaniment, props, or costumes within the three-minute time limit. They will be judged on a scale of zero to ten with the lowest and the highest scores dropped to give a highest possible score of thirty
Sunday, June 5th, 2016 Feature Jonathan Brown and Open Mic hosted by Moody Black. Jonathan Brown is a native of Greenville, SC who currently bases out of New Orleans. He is the author of several chapbooks and cd's. He is a former member or the Greenville and San Francisco Slam Teams. He is a former educator who holds an MFA in creative writing. Sunday, June 12th, 2016 Feature poet Beshaun Judah of Birmingham, Alabama with host Moody Black. Born as BeShaun Leavell, the artist Shaun Judah is a well-seasoned Emcee and Poet. However the stage handle Shaun Judah is not just a moniker of convenience, "Shaun" meaning God is Gracious and "Judah" meaning praise or to praise. Both names capture the essence of this man, who recognizes that he has experienced God's grace on a daily basis and through his toughest moments in life. Because of the grace that Shaun has received, he expresses his spirituality that inspires him through life. The night will feature a Question and Answer session as well as a book signing. The night will also feature a short open mic for local poets.

Up to twelve local poets may sign up for the three-round poetry slam. After the first round, only eight poets will perform in the second round, and only four poets will perform in the final round. Each poet will perform one original poem without musical accompaniment, props, or costumes within the three-minute time limit. They will be judged on a scale of zero to ten with the lowest and the highest scores dropped to give the highest possible score of thirty. The winner of the slam will receive a prize.
