Saturday August 29th.

TEEN Track. 9:00 am to 6:30 pm (Teen poetry slam/performance starts at 5 pm).
$10 includes lunch. Or $5 for the morning only. Teens under 13 should purchase a morning only pass.
Teens must be 14-years of age or older for a full day pass.

Two certified educators will act as poetry “counselors” for the teen track: Darelle D. Dove and Sassy the Poet. They will be available for teens to ask questions and discuss poetry throughout the day. NOTE: You can do this event with your teen if you buy an adult pass.


Teens may not be dropped off before 9:00 am. Please feed your teen breakfast. Lunch will be provided. If your teen has special dietary needs, feel free to pack them a lunch. Teens should bring a light sweater, water bottle, snacks, favorite pens and notebooks, or other items to make them comfortable. All teens 16 and under must be picked up by 7:30 pm. [AFTER 7:30: Parents may accompany their teens to the evening poetry slam but please note it is a free-speech event and may contain mature themes.]


TEEN WORKSHOP | WRITING | 9:30 - 10:30 | Facilitated by Daryl Funn, certified teaching artist with the Alliance Theater Atlanta and Atlanta Slammaster.   Teens will focus on the writing of spoken word. The workshop will include ice breakers, writing prompts, strategies, and fun poetry activities for any level of writers.


TEEN WORKSHOP | PERFORMANCE | 10:30 - 11:30 | Sassy the Poet. Sassy is a slam champion, certified SC teacher, and a veteran of the Say What Slam team.Teens will focus on the performance of spoken word including exercises, strategies, and fun poetry activities for all levels of performers.


LUNCH |  11:30 | Box lunch. Jason's Deli. Please indicate any dietary restrictions on your Google form.

Audience ticket to INVITATIONAL POETRY SLAM | 12:00 PM TO 2:00 PM | This is ROUND ONE of the $800 invitational anniversary poetry slam. 24 poets will each perform 1 poem of their own original work which will be judged by 5 randomly chosen members of the audience. The top twelve scoring poets will advance to the evening round. PG-13.


TEEN | WRITING LOUNGE AND FREE TIME |  2:00 - 3:00 pm | Darelle D Dove | Teens can hang out, work on poetry, hula hoop, throw a frisbee, and have time to chill out.

TEEN | HAIKU WORKSHOP | 3:00 - 4:00 pm | Haiku Battle is an exciting way to use haiku to reflect on daily life, make a political statement, or just point out the irony of modern life. Join National Haiku finalist and Regional Haiku champion Black Phoenix in this fun poetry workshop. The workshop will culminate in a short example of Haiku Death Match aka Head to Head Haiku.


TEEN | REHEARSAL WORKSHOP | 4:00 - 5:00 pm | Sassy the Poet, Darelle. D Dove, and other experienced poets will help students work in small groups to practice their poems for the slam.


TEEN POETRY SLAM | 5 PM - 6:30 PM | Host Darelle D. Dove. Teens can each present one original poem in this one round teen poetry slam. Family and friends are invited to attend. Part of teen pass. Winning Teen Poet will receive $50. Tickets for public are $5. Families can also sign up for pizza dinner.


PIZZA and POETRY PARTY FROM MARCOS: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM | Add on $5 | Join us for dinner for the opportunity to mix with other poets both emerging and professional. Enjoy fellowship with like-minded poetry lovers.  Gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, and chicken only options available - but please indicate your dietary restrictions on your Google Form.

All teens 16 and under must be picked up by 7:30. No supervision of teens will be provided after 7:30.

STAFF:

By day Darelle D. Dove is a Media Assistant at East North Street Academy and employee of Greenville County Schools. But he is also a poet, inspirational speaker, rapper, youth mentor, and actor who was recently ranked 6th in the South East Regional Poetry Slam as an individual competitor. He will appear in the Warehouse Theater's upcoming theater season and is a veteran member of the Say What Greenville Slam Team. As a member of the Say What Greenville Slam Team his has been instrumental to the team's success - taking second place at the Southeast Regional Southern Fried Poetry Slam and taking fifth at the National Poetry Slam. His work is featured on Button Poetry (Youtube).

By day Sassy the Poet is SC certified High School teacher but she is also an inspirational speaker and spoken word artist. She is a veteran member of the Say What Greenville Poetry Slam Team that finished second place at the Southeast Regional Southern Fried Poetry Slam and the top ten at the National Poetry Slam.

Kimberly J Simms is a certified SC English Teacher and the director of Wits End Poetry. By day she is a teaching artist and director of Greenville's SmartARTS program for the Metropolitan Arts Council. She was the 2016 Carl Sandburg National Historic Site Writer-In Residence (Flat Rock, NC); she is a member of the SC Humanities Council’s Speaker’s Bureau and a pioneer turned curator in the world of poetry slams.

Daryl Funn aka MistaFunn is a poet, speaker, and educator based out of Atlanta, GA. Mistafunn’s focus is delivering a memorable and fun performance that makes people evaluate their assumptions. His extensive toastmaster, theatre , and classical vocal training allows him to create an environment where his audience is not just wowed but left but educated. Mr. Funn takes poetry slam into schools across Metro Atlanta in his role as a teaching artist for the Alliance Theater.
