The Art of Slam Conference will provide a fun poetry slam immersion where all levels of poets, as well as educators (including teaching artists), can grow their art through writing and performance workshops, performances, panels, and Q&A's with professional poets on September 29th from 9:00 am to 5 pm. The night will feature a $800 Invitational Poetry Slam. Get your workshop pass or slam tickets here:

Adult Choice 1
ADULT | SLAM WORKSHOP | WRITING | 9:30 - 10:30 | Facilitated by Johnny C Weaver. Learn the art of writing a spoken word poem, understand the strategy of poetry slam, and gain tips to take your writing to the next level with Slammaster Johnny C Weaver. 
ADULT/EDUCATOR | SLAM WORKSHOP | WRITING | 9:30 - 10:30 | Facilitated by Asia Samson | Learn the art of writing for poetry slam and how to lead effective writing exercises for young people. Gain insight into slam strategy and the collaborative editing process. See how Asia Samson connects with young people across the country and gets your classroom lit.

TEEN WORKSHOP | WRITING | 9:30 - 10:30 | Facilitated by Daryl Funn, certified teaching artist with the Alliance Theater and Atlanta Slammaster.  Teens will focus on the writing of spoken word. The workshop will include ice breakers, writing prompts, strategies, and fun poetry activities for any level of writers.

ADULT | PANEL | How to Make a Living as Poet | 10:30 - 11:30 | Moderator Johnny C Weaver. Panelists Daryl Funn, Asia Samson, Moody Black. Ever wondered how to become a professional poet, book a tour, or work as a teaching artist? Gain insights from a panel of professional poets. Q&A at end of the session.
ADULT/EDUCATOR: Writing Lounge |  | 10:30 - 11:30 | Reflect on your learning or work on a draft of a poem. Professional poets will be available to give you feedback.

TEEN WORKSHOP | PERFORMANCE | 10:30 - 11:30 | Sassy the Poet. Sassy is a slam champion, certified SC teacher, and a veteran of the Say What Slamteam.Teens will focus on the performance of spoken word including exercises, strategies, and fun poetry activities for all levels of performers.

LUNCH |  11:30 | Box lunch. Jason's Deli. Please indicate any dietary restrictions on your Google form. 

Audience ticket to INVITATIONAL POETRY SLAM | 12:00 PM TO 2:00 PM | This is ROUND ONE of the $800 invitational anniversary poetry slam. 24 poets will each perform 1 poem of their own original work which will be judged by 5 randomly chosen members of the audience. The top twelve scoring poets will advance to the evening round.

ADULT/EDUCATOR | WRITING LOUNGE AND FREE TIME.  |  2:00 - 3:00 pm | Time to wind down write, chill, and hang out with other poetry lovers.

TEEN | WRITING LOUNGE AND FREE TIME |  2:00 - 3:00 pm | Darelle D Dove | Teens can hang out, work on poetry, hula hoop, throw a frisbee, and have time to chill out.

EDUCATOR & ADULT & TEEN | HAIKU WORKSHOP | 3:00 - 4:00 PM | Black Phoenix | Haiku Battle is an exciting way to use haiku to reflect on daily life, make a political statement, or just point out the irony of modern life. Join National Haiku finalist and Regional Haiku champion Black Phoenix in this fun poetry workshop. The workshop will culminate in a short example of Haiku Death Match aka Head to Head Haiku.
ADULT | NACA 411 | 3:00 - 4:00 PM | Asia Samson | Learn about the National Association of Campus Activities and how professional poets market themselves to college audiences at their annual booking conferences. The Asia Project has broken college-booking records for the most booked poetry act garnering them the awards of APCA College Performer of the Year and thrice APCA Spoken Word Artist of the Year and most recently, was featured by NPR's Tiny Desk Contest.  This talk will also include a brief performance by Asia Samson.

TEEN | REHEARSAL WORKSHOP | 4:00 - 5:00 pm | Sassy the Poet, Darelle. D Dove, and other experienced poets will help students work in small groups to practice their poems for the slam.

EDUCATOR | POETRY SLAM in the CLASSROOM WORKSHOP| 4:00 pm - 5:00 | Moody Black and Daryl Funn. Learn the basics of taking the art of poetry slam into the classroom whether through a residency or arts integration program. Daryl Funn is a teaching artist for the Alliance Theater Atlanta. Moody Black is a teaching artist for SmartARTS Greenville. The workshop will include a warm-up, a reproducible activity from each Daryl Funn and Moody Black, and a Q&A at the end.
ADULT | PUBLISHING 101 | 4 PM - 5 PM | Facilitated by Kimberly J Simms | Ever wondered the basics of how to place your poetry in magazines and literary journals? This workshop will provide resources, strategies, and editing techniques for your poetry to give it the best shot at finding a home in a literary magazine. Kimberly's poetry has been featured in over 30 literary magazines and journals, and her latest book of poetry was published by Finishing Line Press.
(This is a $60 plus value for only $35)  All events take place inside Artistry Gallery.

PIZZA and POETRY PARTY FROM MARCOS: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM | Join us for dinner for the opportunity to mix with other poets both emerging and professional. Enjoy fellowship with like-minded poetry lovers.  Gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, and chicken only options available - but please indicate your dietary restrictions on your Google Form.

AUDIENCE | Invitational Poetry Slam & Afterparty  | 8 PM | Public Ticketed Event | Included with VIP Conference Pass | Don't miss the top 12 Poets competing for the chance to win $800 in prizes. On the microphone, Asia Samson is a poet, activist, and part-time
ninja. This poet of Filipino heritage centers much of his work
around his Asian identity, love, family, and struggle. He has been
featured on HBO Def Poetry Jam, and he has shared the stage
with such artists as Janell Monae, Jill Scott, DMX, Mos Def, and
KRS-One. He has garnered college booking awards such as APCA
College Performer of the Year and thrice APCA Spoken Word
Artist of the Year. He has also been featured on BET, TEDx, Button Poetry.
He is also an individual and team finalist in both the National and Southern Fried Southeast Regional Poetry Slam (the two largest poetry slam festivals in the world).

Daryl Funn aka MistaFunn is a poet, speaker, and educator
based out of Atlanta, GA. Mistafunn’s focus is delivering a
memorable and fun performance that makes people
evaluate their assumptions. His extensive toastmaster,
theatre , and classical vocal training allows him to create an
environment where his audience is not just wowed but left
but educated. Mr. Funn takes poetry slam into schools
across Metro Atlanta in his role as a teaching artist for the
Alliance Theater.
