Wits End Poetry is a literary non-profit that provides a space for people to enjoy the art of poetry and to share their poetry in their community. Wits End Poetry is committed to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment at all our events. We have a zero-tolerance policy for harassment of any kind, including sexual harassment, verbal abuse, bullying, and any behavior that undermines the dignity or safety of our participants at our events. We also have a commitment to safety through background checking paid performers, emcees, and DJ's.
Nondiscrimination Commitment
Wits End Poetry does not tolerate discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, religion, age, or any other protected characteristic. We celebrate diversity and are dedicated to fostering a community where everyone, including LGBTQ+ individuals and people of color, feels valued and respected.

Verbal harassment: Offensive comments, slurs, or discriminatory remarks based on race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or any other characteristic.

Reporting and Response
We encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses harassment, bullying, or discrimination to report it to event organizers or Wits End Poetry FOH staff immediately. Reports can be made verbally during the event or via email afterward at witsendpoetrysc@gmail.com. There is also an anonymous form here: Coming soon. This process is confidential.
Consequences for Violations
First Instance: In cases of minor, isolated incidents, a verbal or written warning may be issued, depending on the severity of the behavior.
Repeat or Severe Incidents: The individual may be banned from attending Wits End Poetry events for a duration determined by the Executive Committee. They may be barred from the slam team, volunteering, or emceeing events. After repeated infractions, individuals may be banned indefinately. This information is confidential and will not be published or shared with the public.
Physical Harassment or Assault: Any instance involving physical harassment or assault will result in immediate expulsion from the event, and we strongly recommend reporting such incidents to the police.
We encourage victims to report crimes to the police.
Commitment to Safety
Wits End Poetry strives to handle all reports with sensitivity and discretion. We stand with victims and will provide support in addressing incidents, including connecting them with appropriate resources or authorities.
All of our Say What Slam Team members, Event Emcees, DJ's, and board members are subject to a background check. Individuals with a history of sexual felonies are strictly prohibited from serving as hosts, emcees, or paid performers at Wits End Poetry events. Otherwise, results are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. A prior conviction does not automatically disqualify an individual; decisions are made based on the nature and timing of the offense in relation to the safety of our community. This process is confidential.
By attending our events, participants agree to uphold this policy and contribute to a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for everyone.
Accessibility Statement
Wits End Poetry is committed to creating inclusive and welcoming spaces for all participants. We host our events at Coffee Underground in their Black Box Theater, a historic venue that unfortunately does not have an elevator or lift for accessing spaces beyond the ground floor. We understand this may present barriers for individuals with mobility challenges, and we deeply regret any inconvenience this causes.
We do also host pop-up events at accessible venues so please let us know if you would like more information about those events. We have explored options for making the venue more accessible, but due to fire safety regulations, installing a lift or elevator is not feasible. We are committed to seeking alternative solutions and working with the venue to accommodate everyone as best we can.
If you have specific accessibility needs or would like assistance, please contact us in advance at witsendpoetrysc@gmail.com. We will do our best to make reasonable accommodations, such as reserving accessible seating or providing remote participation options for select events.
Thank you for your understanding as we work to balance the constraints of a historic space with our commitment to inclusivity.
